2017 Annual Administrative Professional Luncheon

The 2017 Administrative Professional of the Year was awarded at the annual luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, April 26th.   Denise Cox, Church Secretary for Southside Baptist Church, was this year’s lucky winner.  The Chamber of Commerce Officers and Directors want to thank everyone who attended the luncheon and the chamber members who made donations to support this occasion. 

2017 Annual Georgia Great Steak Cook-Off

The 2017 Georgia Great Steak Cook-Off was the largest ever with 65 teams competing for cash and prizes totaling over $6000.  Teams were from Hazlehurst, Alma, Denton, Snipesville, Broxton, Baxley, Lumber City, Milledgeville, Eatonton, Reidsville, Douglas, McRae, Statesboro, Magnolia, Arkansas, and Terrell, Texas.  The top 5 teams received cash and trophies, while the next 5 received a framed certificate. The chief cooks were also entered in a drawing for 4 lawn mowers provided by Husqvarna. The winners of all activities during the 11th Annual Georgia Great Steak Cook-off are shown on the Home Page of the website. 

2017 Annual Peaches to the Beaches

The Chamber of Commerce was a Official Vendor for the Annual Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale.  Several Chamber Directors donated items to sale. The Chamber office was open to all for information and public restrooms. Did you know that Jeff Davis County has the largest vendor site for this event?

2017 Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet

The 52nd Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet was held February 27th at Twisted Pines Golf Course.   The theme this year was “Denim & Diamonds” with the attire being very casual as we celebrated and honored “diamonds” from our community. .   Dr. Stan Rentz introduced the STAR Student, Madelyn Herrington, and STAR Teacher, Mrs. Marsha McCoy, and he presented each with a certificate from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE).   Mrs. Edna Hughes recognized Dr. Kirk Munsayac as the 2016 Citizen of the Year and Mr. Ashley Tyree recognized David Miller as the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and each recipient was given a beautiful beveled edge crystal trophy as a memento of the occasion. Musical entertainment was provided by another diamond from our community, Christopher Lynch.  Attendees were invited to a western theme prop photo session in the room adjoining the dining area.   This was the highlight of the evening and enjoyed by all who participated.  Mr. and Mrs. Roberts Wiggins, Jr., owners of Huddle House and Dick’s Wings donated the $100 door prize and the lucky winner was Aleesia Crawford. 

2016 Annual Christmas Parade

The 2016 Annual Lighted Christmas Parade was held on December 10, 2016.  Mrs. Fonda Ussery was Grand Marshal.  We had close to 100 entries.  The streets were lined with spectators of all ages. It appears that everyone enjoyed the event and we hope to continue to grow with entries in the years to come.

2016 Annual Community Christmas Tree

The 2016 Chamber of Commerce Community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony was held on November 28th in the presence of family members of those being recognized.  A brief ceremony was held inside the office and after reciting the names of all being honored, attendees were invited outside for the lighting of the tree.  There are currently 149 ornaments adorning the tree with 107 silver ornaments representing deceased loved ones and 42 red colored ornaments representing living loved ones.

2016 Business Costume Contest

The 8th Annual Business Halloween Costume Contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce was once again successful.  There were 10 businesses entered in the contest with 59 individuals in costumes plus the two out-of-town judges. This year’s winner was Family Healthcare Connection dressed in characters representing the Toy Story movie.  Genesis HealthCare/Hazlehurst Center was the Runner-Up in the contest and dressed as Witches.

The 2016 Administrative Professional of the Year was awarded at the annual luncheon and fashion show sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, April 27th.   Karen Lay, Administrative Assistant to Judge E. M. Wilkes III, was this year’s lucky winner.  Chamber President, Sallie Ursrey presented Karen with an award certificate, a beautiful hanging basket of flowers, and a huge gift basket which was sponsored by the following businesses: Altamaha Bank & Trust, Bank of Hazlehurst, Bateman Realty, Colonial Flower & Gift Shop, Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Co. Board of Tourism, Hospice of South Georgia, Jeff Davis Hospital, Lumber City Nursing & Rehab, Renasant Bank, SO GA Cotton Gin, and the Chamber of Commerce.   The delicious luncheon was prepared by 2 Brothers Catering.  Spring and summer fashions from Georgia Outfitters, Goody’s, Colonial Flower & Gift Shop, and Simply Elegant Boutique were revealed by 16 lovely models during the fashion show.  We want to thank all the models as well as Vickie Bateman and Ashley McPherson Googe for coordinating the fashion show and working with the models.  The floral arrangements were prepared by Faye Ray and were given as door prizes to one lucky ticket holder seated at each table.   Johnson’s Office Solutions also provided take home gifts for everyone in attendance.

The 10th Annual Georgia Great Steak Cook-off was the biggest to date and the Chamber was honored to have David Nelson, Chairman of the World Championship Steak Cook-off from Magnolia, Arkansas attend this year’s event and also serve as one of the 5 judges.  The 2015 World Champion Steak Cook-off winner and 1st Runner-up teams from Texas were among the slate of 64 teams from Hazlehurst, Thomaston, Broxton, Eastman, Snipesville, Douglas, Alma, Statesboro, Mount Vernon, Reidsville, Baxley, Surrency, Vidalia, Tifton, Denton, and Lyons.  The teams competed for cash and prizes totaling over $5000.  Congratulations to Brad Leggett for being the lucky winner of the Henry Golden Boy .22 Rifle that was given away prior to the Award’s Ceremony. The 51st Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet was held last week where several individuals were honored and recognized for their service to our community. Fonda Ussery was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to youth development and work with the Jeff Davis County 4-H Club as well as the numerous hours she volunteers for other individuals and organizations within Jeff Davis County. Terry Stone was honored with the Jane W. Baggett Director's Award for her outstanding service and dedication in performing her duties "Above and Beyond" what is expected of a Director. The 2016 STAR Student, Jordan Ernst, and STAR Teacher, Betsy Brown, were also recognized for the academic excellence they exemplify at Jeff Davis High. The Chamber Officers and Directors want to take this opportunity to congratulate all those who received awards.
