The 8th Annual Georgia Great Steak Cook-off and 4th Annual Young Chef Hamburger Cook-off sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce were once again successful. There were 40 steak teams and 9 young chefs in the hamburger cook-off competing for cash and prizes totaling over $3,000. We had teams from not only Hazlehurst but also Lumber City, Chester, Ellabelle, Nahunta, Alma, Statesboro, Eastman, Waycross, and one team traveled from Plant City, Florida. The additional prize money, vendors and activities for kids certainly contributed to making this year’s cook-off even more special. An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the help of all Chamber directors, business sponsors, family and special friends. The Chamber wants to especially thank the following businesses and individuals who sponsored the event: Jeff Davis County Board of Education, City of Hazlehurst, Hazlehurst/Jeff Davis Co. Fire Rescue, Royal Oak Charcoal, B & S Industrial Contractors, Beasley Forest Products, Aaron’s, Googes’, Coca-Cola Company, Western Motel Inn & Suites, Triple H Specialty Co., Woody Folsom Automotive, Charlie’s Choice Seasoning, Satilla REMC, Wild Adventures Theme Park, 2 Brothers Catering, Jeff Davis Ledger, Davis Farm & Garden, Village Pizza, Handy Andy, Ray Wooten, The Tri-County Shopper, Altamaha Technical College, Jerry Wooten, WHJD-FM Radio-Hazlehurst, PalletOne, Walmart, Jameson Inn & Suites, Altamaha Bank & Trust, Simply Elegant Boutique, H & H Home Supply, BBQ Dragon, Twice-the-Ice, HeritageBank of the South, Interstate Credit Union, Smith’s Fried Chicken, Piggly Wiggly, WAJQ-FM Radio-Alma, and Subway. The following individuals assisted with preparing food and serving dinner: Kristin Hobbs, Avia Holmes, Kinsley White, Lera Bennett, Natasha Bennett, Brenda Merritt, and numerous Chamber Directors. Chris and Beth Davis provided the sound system and additional assistance. Musical entertainment in the afternoon was provided by Jessica Medders. D. L. Jump loaned his grill to the fire department to be used in preparing approximately 500 dinner steaks. Judges for the steak competition were David Thompson representing Royal Oak Charcoal from Roswell; Michael Dellaporta representing GrillGrate, LLC from Cartersville; Keri Crosby, Executive Director of the Baxley Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Glenn A. Deibert, President of Okefenokee Technical College from Waycross; and James Feltham, Chef from Baxley.
